International Raccoon Appreciation Day

raccoon babies (14)
Raccoons seem to be a “love ’em or hate ’em” critter. If you worked at Procyon, you would quickly come to “love ’em”! In the early spring we get many orphaned raccoons, just born, with their eyes still closed, not able to take care of themselves.

Their care is very intense since they need feedings every few hours, up to 6 times per day. Most rehabs won’t take babies that young because of the amount of care that is required. Procyon specializes in this area, so receives infant raccoons from many parts of Ontario.

A squirrel is a squirrel, a chipmunk is a chipmunk, a chickadee is a chickadee. Right! Wrong! Once in a while, we get something different.

We got a little red squirrel who was black. Came in with its little red sibling. It is a melanistic red squirrel. And it is so beautiful.

Melanism is a condition that turns animals and birds black. Caused by an over development of melanin. This can turn an animal fully or partially black. Melanism is fairly rare and truly beautiful.

National Opossum Day

Hard Work Equals Releases (9)
by Elizabeth Trickey, Photos by Jennifer Howard

Our second animal of the month is the opossum, and October 18th is their special day. This animal is unique for many reasons. For one, it is the only marsupial (carries babies in a pouch) in North America. It also doesn’t have a specific territory - it is always on the move. But the most amazing thing about it is that it lived way back in the dinosaur age! Scientists know this because their fossilized remains have been dated at 70 million years old! Wow - extremely unique!

An opossum looks like a giant, grey fuzzy rat. It is extremely adorable as a baby, but over time, it will start to look a little scruffy. It has big round furless black ears, small black eyes, and a white furry face with a pointed snout and little pink nose. The cute little face becomes a lot less cute when it opens its mouth to show 50 very sharp teeth! And an opossum has this habit of showing who’s boss by keeping its mouth open for long periods of time when it is trying to look intimidating. Let me tell you, it works! Its feet have opposable thumbs on the hind legs, and it has a long, hairless tail that is able to curl around tree branches. An adult is about the size of a cat, is nocturnal, and does not hibernate.

A Young Procyon Wildlife Supporter!

Thanks to Olivia who in the spring raised money for Procyon through selling maple syrup. Yesterday she came to the Centre with Stuffies and paper towels which we go through constantly.

You must be 18 years or older to be a volunteer at Procyon Wildlife. But there is still lots that kids can do to help!

Here she is with Crystal (the best animal care coordinator possible). Thank you so much Olivia, your support is greatly appreciated.
Before they left, Olivia and her mom asked what more can kids do to help us out.

We have a lot of squirrels overwintering with us this year. So the following are things you can go out and collect for them.
  • Maple tree keys.
  • Acorns.
  • Black walnuts.
  • Apples.
  • Pine cones especially the small ones but any size will do.
  • Leftover small pumpkins.

Please note that unless you are paying cash on delivery, all orders must be prepaid using our online store.
To avoid disappointment, please call Procyon Wildlife (905) 729-0033 to make sure someone will be at the Centre before coming to pick up your order.
