It is highly contagious and they believe hunters have spread the disease by bringing their diseased kill home and then not properly disposing of the carcass. The deer are then infected. This needs to get out to the hunters.
It is unknown if it can hurt humans if consumed. They ‘think’ there would be only a slight chance.
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a progressive, fatal disease of the nervous system of cervids such as deer, and elk. It is known as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), or prion disease. It can be in deer, moose and elk and is similar to mad cow disease. It eats holes into the brains of its victims. The deer, elk, moose, and reindeer that contract this disease basically become zombies. … You are most likely to find it in the central nervous system, like the brain and spinal column.
Tonsil biopsies use to test CWD in live deer
There is no treatment as yet but big studies are being done in Wyoming and they are hoping for a vaccine soon.
